VSS and mass-change protection

Use snapshots for open files and checks for unusual changes.

How to use it

  1. For open or locked files, enable Read from VSS snapshot on Protection.
  2. VSS requires administrator privileges and working Windows VSS services. If snapshot creation fails, inspect the detailed log.
  3. Enable Stop backup on mass changes and set the percentage threshold for changed or missing files.
  4. If the threshold is exceeded against the previous backup, the job stops before upload and deletion. Expected bulk changes can also trigger this check.
  5. Inspect the source. Resolve suspicious changes before disabling protection and running the job again.
Good to knowAnomaly detection is not antivirus. VSS does not guarantee application consistency for every database; use application-aware backup methods for critical systems.
